WHEN applying for jobs the last thing you want is to have a spelling mistake on your CV, but it’s surprisingly common with the word ‘initiative’ catching people out the most.
The experts at Netherlands-based firm, Resume.io, have revealed the top 10 most commonly misspelled words.

‘Initiative’ was spelt incorrectly in 32 per cent of CVs, with people spelling it ‘inchitive’ and ‘intatitve’.
The next word which tripped people up was ‘detail-orientated’, with 29 per cent of people getting their letters mixed up.
The third most common error was ‘perfectionist’, with 25 per cent misspelling it, with variations ranging from ‘perfactionist’ to ‘perfectonist’.
In fourth place is ‘management’, with 21 per cent writing it down wrong, and next was ‘professional’, which was incorrect on 17 per cent of CVs.
Top 10 misspelled words
‘Implemented’ and ‘corresponding’ were in joint sixth place with 14 per cent of job seekers getting them wrong on their resumes.
Some nine per cent of people made a mistake on the word ‘achieved’, with people mixing up where the ‘i’ went, writing down ‘acheved’ or ‘acheived’ instead.
Double consonants also caused problems for ‘accurate’, with seven per cent of people misspelling it, while five per cent spelt ‘succeeded’ wrong.
Quite a few people even misspelled the name of their employer
Resume.io analysed 1,248 CVs looking at common spelling errors, adding that 73 per cent of managers admitted they’d be less likely to hire someone who had made a mistake on their application.
Menno Olsthoorn, a spokesman for Resume.io, said: “Quite a few people even misspelled the name of their employer (for example, MacDonald’s instead of McDonald’s).
“Curriculum vitae was also misspelled regularly, while ‘professional’ and ‘accurate’ are two words that you really want to spell correctly.”
