The Handmaid's Tale season 4 theories: Americans to be blamed for June’s attack

Episode 13 of The Handmaid’s Tale’s fourth season, The Word, left June (played by Elisabeth Moss) fighting for her life in the final moments.

After successfully smuggling over 50 children across the border into Canada, an altercation with a Gilead guard left her bleeding from a potentially fatal gunshot wound.

June is set to continue the fight against Gilead with the Handmaid resistance Mayday throughout season four, but may need some time to recover from her wounds.

Although June will still be under the watchful care of Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), the Handmaid has managed to exert some power over one of the founders of Gilead.

Filming had begun in Toronto earlier this year, but was put on hold after just two weeks in the can due to the outbreak of coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown restrictions.

Elisabeth Moss was set to make her directorial debut, and the star and the rest of the cast are hoped to continue production later this year.

A teaser trailer for the fourth season was recently released on YouTube, but plot details for the upcoming instalment are being kept close to the chest.

During the unexpected hiatus, fans have been speculating how June will recover from her wounds, escape the vengeful Waterfords (Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski) and reignite the rebellion.

As she recovers from her wounds, this theory suggests Mayday may have to shift the blame for June’s injury to spin public perception to their favour as the resistance continues.

In season three, June receives a package of letters from Handmaids across America, detailing their experiences of rape, torture and servitude under oppressive Commanders.

The letters ‘go boom’ when they’re released online, causing a global outrage and prompting the Waterfords to leave Canada, though they are later arrested by Canadian authorities.

Moreover, the Handmaid resistance will also have to explain how 50 children of Gilead upped and disappeared after the events of the season finale.

The fan continued: “They blame the Americans for ‘kidnapping’ the children too. (More wishful thinking.)”

Now June has Commander Lawrence under her influence the Handmaid can use some of her newfound power to divert scrutiny away from Mayday’s underground resistance.

As June and the other Handmaids and Marthas carry on chipping away at Gilead’s regime from behind the scenes, they may have to resort to some more sophisticated tactics to take down the patriarchal state.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 will be released on Hulu in 2021.
