Planning a funeral in lockdown – here's what you need to consider

We understand how difficult it can be to lose a loved one, and that it’s especially so in these challenging times. The grieving process is already worsened for those who have lost someone due to the coronavirus and not been able to say goodbye.

But a funeral is a very personal event, and while current Government guidance means that we need to alter the way we usually work, we are still on hand to provide expert advice and care, and to help you arrange a dignified funeral for your loved one.

If you’re in the unfortunate situation of having to organise a funeral, here are the things you need to know.

Can I give my loved one the send-off I want?

While the current situation means you might not be able to have everybody there who would like to attend, you can still organise a funeral that is special.

We are able to arrange a private funeral now, and you can have flowers, music and a hearse. Most importantly, you will have the time you need to pay your respects.

Then, once the restrictions have been lifted, Dignity can help arrange a memorial service to bring together family and friends as you would have wanted.

How many people are allowed to attend a funeral?

In order to keep in line with the Government’s guidelines, crematorium operators have imposed safety limits on the number of attendees. This isn’t just determined by the size of the crematorium chapel, but also by the doors and corridors, to ensure social distancing is maintained at all times.

The Church of England is also beginning to hold funerals in its churches again. In both cases different venues will have their own restrictions and your local Dignity funeral director can advise you. Crematoriums might also offer the option of live-streaming a funeral – availability will vary according to the venue.

Can I visit the funeral director in person?

If you have been affected by the coronavirus or are self-isolating, we have procedures that will allow us to arrange a funeral with you.
