The sad fact of life is that everyone will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. For the lucky few, this reality will only come into play much later on in their lives, but for some, the reality of hair loss became all too familiar too soon. Fortunately, there is a way to help combat this and taking a daily vitamin could help.

What the study says
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, zinc as an essential micronutrient was investigated.
The study noted: “Zinc is an essential micronutrient for human metabolism that catalyses more than 100 enzymes, facilitates protein folding, and helps regulate gene expression.
“Symptoms of zinc deficiency are nonspecific, including growth retardation, diarrhoea, alopecia, glossitis, nail dystrophy, decreased immunity, and hypogonadism in males.”
In another study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, oral zinc therapy for zinc deficiency-related telogen effluvium was analysed.
The study noted: “Zinc is crucial for maintaining human body homeostasis and is one of the major components of hormones, signal molecules and enzymes.
“In order to test whether oral zinc administration can successfully improve zinc deficiency-related alopecia, we treated five patients with zinc deficiency-related telogen effluvium with oral zinc administration in the form of polaprezinc.
“In all patients, hair loss was cured or improved.”
According to the NHS, men need around 9.5mg of zinc per day while women need around 7mg.
If a person takes zinc supplements, they should not take more than 25mg a day unless advised by a doctor.
Foods which are rich in zinc include whole grains and milk products, oysters, red meat, baked beans, chickpeas and nuts, especially almonds and cashews.
