EastEnders has been on BBC One for the past 35 years and the Square has seen an abundance of drama throughout its time. The soap marked its 35th anniversary earlier this year with the boat crash, which ended in one of the Walford residents being killed off. Now, just a few months on, another momentous occasion is taking place behind the camera for EastEnders.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from EastEnders.

Why isn’t EastEnders on tonight?

Normally, EastEnders is broadcast four times a week at 7.30pm on BBC One with fans hooked to their screens to find out what’s going to happen next.

However, for the past few months, the drama has had to halve the number of episodes it airs every week.

This is because of the coronavirus pandemic which brought the film and television industries to a halt in a bid to try and stop the spread of COVID-19.

So by just showing two instalments per week, this helped to keep EastEnders on television for as long as possible.

However, now is the time many fans have not been looking forward to.

While the East End soap won’t be on our screens, there will be a spin-off series in its place.

EastEnders: Secrets from the Square will be hosted by presenter Stacey Dooley as she visits Walford and interviews members of the cast.

On tonight’s first instalment, she will be speaking to actors Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright who play Mick and Linda Carter respectively.

They will be talking about some of the show’s storylines as well as what happens backstage during filming for the soap.

In the latest and last EastEnders episode for the time being, fans were left shocked when the new owners of the Queen Vic were revealed.

While Phil Mitchell (played by Steve McFadden) was planning on buying the pub, two people who aren’t exactly his biggest fans at the moment took it right from underneath him.

Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) had revealed he sold it to Phil’s wife Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) who teamed up with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).

As Phil couldn’t believe what he was seeing, Sharon cheekily asked her husband from behind the bar: “What can I get you?”

EastEnders is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
